Welcome to the Sydney Burlesque Diaries
"Where do you perform?"
This is the first question I get asked as soon as I tell someone I am a burlesque dancer. It is a pretty difficult question to answer because the truth is, I just dance wherever I get paid to! The Sydney burlesque scene is larger and more varied than most people might expect. With the ever restrictive worlds of social media and all their perplexing algorithms it can be hard to wrap your head around what events are actually happening.
In a quest to cover all the bases I am going to explore the ins and outs of what is on and what makes the Sydney Burlesque scene unique. Wish me luck!
I've lived in Sydney for over 10 years, I've seen burlesque institutions come and go and I've been lucky enough to collaborate with some amazing burlesque producers. I am passionate about burlesque as a highly accessible form of performance art.
I'm going to be honest here too and say I will always be a little biased towards my longest running collaboration. In 2010 Memphis Mae and I met backstage at a show called The Peel. She was a bossy little pocket rocket who helped me with my hair and I was an lanky hot mess who helped her with her lashes. BOOM! Friendship was born. For over 8 Years Memphis has produced Mr Falcons Burlesque and in my opinion it is the best show in Sydney. I'm so incredibly proud of the work my friend has done and am looking forward to sharing more about it with you all.
Hold on to your seats shaggas, cos I'm about to get serious.
